Port congestion in Northern Europe is intensifying, with waiting times for berth space increasing by 77% in Bremerhaven, 49% in Hamburg, and 37% in Antwerp between late March and mid-May, according to a recent report by Drewry. These delays are attributed to labor shortages and low water levels on the Rhine River, which are hindering barge traffic to and from inland locations.

Compounding the issue are geopolitical tensions, including the U.S. administration’s threats of imposing 50% tariffs on European Union goods, adding uncertainty to global trade dynamics. Carriers like MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co. have announced general rate increases and peak season surcharges starting in June for cargo from Asia, further escalating shipping costs.

Additionally, ongoing disruptions in the Red Sea, due to attacks by Yemen-based Houthis, have forced cargo ships to reroute around southern Africa, increasing transit times and contributing to global shipping delays.

Implications for Bali’s Shipping Sector

Even from across the globe, Bali feels the impact of Europe’s ongoing port congestion. A backlog in European ports has led to a global shortage of containers and vessel space, affecting routes throughout Southeast Asia. As a result, shipping from Bali to Europe now faces longer transit times, increased freight rates, and added uncertainty—disrupting export timelines and putting pressure on local businesses relying on international trade.

For shipping and cargo services like RIM Cargo, based right here in Bali, staying ahead of these global disruptions is essential. By securing bookings early and keeping clients informed of evolving timelines, we work to minimize delays and keep Bali’s cargo moving smoothly toward its European destinations.
