Port congestion in Northern Europe is intensifying, with waiting times for berth space increasing by 77% in Bremerhaven, 49% in Hamburg, and 37% in Antwerp between late March and mid-May, according to a recent report by Drewry. These delays are attributed to labor shortages and low water levels on the Rhine River, which are hindering barge traffic to and from inland locations.

Compounding the issue are geopolitical tensions, including the U.S. administration’s threats of imposing 50% tariffs on European Union goods, adding uncertainty to global trade dynamics. Carriers like MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co. have announced general rate increases and peak season surcharges starting in June for cargo from Asia, further escalating shipping costs.
Additionally, ongoing disruptions in the Red Sea, due to attacks by Yemen-based Houthis, have forced cargo ships to reroute around southern Africa, increasing transit times and contributing to global shipping delays.
